Refresh and Renew Your Spirit

While sleep is absolutely essential, it is only a portion of our need for repose.  Our mental, spiritual, and social lives also require rest.  What sleep does for the body, reprieve and quiet reflection offer the spirit.  At the "heart of life," we find a steady rhythm bringing first an episode of work, followed by a period of reprieve and a time of refilling.  Just like the heart, if we keep too rapid a pace, we cannot relax long enough to be refilled.  While there are clearly benefits to the technological advancements we enjoy, they come with distinct tradeoffs, and increasingly we must seek time to refresh and renew our spirits.

Physical rest allows you to relate to your surroundings and your world, but refilling your spirit gives you the ability to connect with yourself and others in meaningful ways.  The health of your spirit determines your outlook, passions, and thoughts.  It's important to your health and well-being that you have both.

There is something to be said about slowing down and learning to do just one thing at a time.  It takes conscious effort if you've grown accustomed to a life of multitasking.  Try eating your food without doing anything else.  You're more likely to appreciate the colors, smells, and taste of your food when you're not distracted by other things.

Great rewards can also come in relationships when you just focus on that one phone call and really choose to hear what's being said or what's being shared.  Keeping your days as simple as possible is a choice you can make regardless of where you live and what your vocation might be.
