The Power of Forgiveness

The Power of Forgiveness

Tagged: Interpersonal Relationships

Have you ever been hurt by the actions or words of another?  If so, you can be left with the lasting feelings of anger, bitterness and even vengeance. In a trusting relationship, forgiveness has an important role to play.

Your ability to forgive (not necessarily forget) has an effect on your health. Studies have shown that forgiveness has healing effects such as reducing anger, hurt, depression, and stress. Forgiveness can also lead to healthier relationships, less hostility, and lower blood pressure. Once you forgive, it can also lead to greater feelings of hope, peace, compassion, and self-confidence. Researchers have found that when people are encouraged to think forgiving thoughts, their stress response was diminished. Another study showed that forgiveness is directly related to fewer problems with substance abuse.

How do you forgive? First, you must commit to change. You need to reflect on your given situation, how you reacted, and how this has affected your life and your health. When you are ready, actively choose to forgive the person who's offended you. Choose to no longer be the victim and release the power that this situation has had in your life. As you let go, no longer let your life be defined by your hurt.

Science has shown the powerful, positive impact of forgiveness. It may not be easy to do, but the effort can pay off in improved relationships and physical health.
