4 Superfoods to Incorporate Into Your Diet This Year
Superfood. It’s a buzzword that’s been floating around for a while, but what exactly does it mean?
A superfood is defined as a natural food regarded as especially beneficial because of its nutrient profile or its health-protecting qualities. Most any fruit or vegetable would fit this description, but there are a few foods that experts agree are especially beneficial to incorporate into your diet.
1. Blueberries
The darker, the better as this means the berries likely have more antioxidants such as Vitamin C, which gives your immune system a boost.
They are also high in potassium, which helps your nerves and muscles function properly. As a low-calorie, high fiber treat, blueberries will satisfy your sweet tooth and keep you feeling full longer.
2. Beans
Another high fiber, low-fat food, beans contain phytonutrients, a substance research shows may help prevent heart disease and cancer. They also provide protein, making a great substitute for meat or poultry.
3. Salmon
Wild salmon, like other fatty, cold water fish, contain omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3s are known to lower your risk of heart disease by decreasing artery-clogging plaque and lowering blood pressure. Also, salmon is low in calories and saturated fat, but high in protein.
4. Almonds
One serving of almonds (about seven) has more calcium to build strong bones than any other nut. It also provides 15 percent of your recommended daily vitamin E. They are high in fat, but it’s mostly monounsaturated fat, which lowers blood cholesterol levels.
